Jonathan Gillespie, Headmaster of St Albans School, commented:

I commend our A Level candidates for how they have overcome the particular challenges of recent years, which have included not having had the experience of being able to take their GCSE examinations in the usual way and, more recently, the return to the 2019 grading standard for their A Levels. Warm congratulations to them on the resilience they have displayed and on the strong A Level results that many have achieved.

As every year, A Level results’ day brings a mix of emotions: disappointment for some as well as elation for others. Whilst celebrating with the latter group, we are providing close support and guidance for those whose plans have unfortunately not come to fruition with the results published today.

Examinations grades are only a small element of the many holistic benefits of a St Albans School education: our leavers can now step forward into the adult world confident that the learning skills and values they have developed during their time with us will stand them in good stead for their future, both at university and in the professional world. We wish them every personal happiness and success in the future.

Jonathan Gillespie, Headmaster of St Albans School, commented: “I am delighted to see the strong commitment, academic ability and hard work of our Sixth Formers, as well as the outstanding teaching the School prides itself upon, being rewarded in this year’s results. This is especially the case in this final year of the transition to the reformed A Levels which provide greater challenges than the predecessor qualifications to the reformed, more demanding A Levels. I congratulate our leavers on their achievements and wish them every success at university and beyond.”

GCSE

In 2019, the School's GCSE results included a new school record of entries that were awarded 9-8/A* grades, which once again highlights the School’s reputation for consistent high achievement.

Over 60% of examinations taken were graded 9-8/A* - which represents a school record - and more than 81% received 9-7/A*-A grades. Some two-thirds of the year group gained at least five 9/8/A* grades, with more than half of the cohort gaining at least six 9/8/A* grades. Over 40% of candidates gained at least eight 9/8/A* grades. Three students achieved straight 9/A* grades and eighteen achieved straight 9s, 8s & A*s. An impressive eighteen pupils achieved at least ten 9/8/A*s.

A number of pupils achieved at least 10 A* grades, including Timothy Bagnall, Jordan Collingwood, Owain Cooke, Harry Hemsi, Jamie Irani and Arjun Kolli. ose achieving at least 9 A*s are Jack Bevan, Caspar Fleming, Max Fryer, Stephen Heaney, Ed Lambert, Benjamin Plumer, Angus Potter, Jamie Sanderson, James Scragg, James Van Der Welle and Morgan Wynne.

These results are all the more impressive given that in the majority of subjects St Albans pupils take the more demanding International GCSE (IGCSE), which serves as a much better preparation for A level study.

Jonathan Gillespie, Headmaster of St Albans School, commented: “Congratulations to our pupils on their individual successes this year. The results are in line with our expectations of this year group, and I am looking forward to welcoming our successful candidates into the Sixth Form together with the large number of new pupils joining the School next week. 62 students achieved at least one A* grade, 33 at least 2 A*s and 13 at least 3 A*s. Head of School Milo Knights from Harpenden, Ganesh Chauhan from Luton and Rachel Hoffman from St Albans shared the distinction of achieving a ‘clean sweep’ of 4 A* grades. Milo goes to Durham to read PPE, Ganesh will read Product Design Engineering at Loughborough and Rachel Chemistry at Durham where she will be joined by her twin sister, Camilla, who also made a significant contribution to the family’s tally of A* grades.

Among the School’s successful Oxbridge candidates are Kirsty Mitchell from St Albans (Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Merton College) and Joshua Southworth from Felden (Chemistry at Pembroke College), both with 3 A*s and an A. With the same grades, Matthew Lavelle from St Albans will study Biology at Exeter, George MacGregor from St Albans will read Economics at Durham and James Thompson from St Albans will study Geophysical Sciences at Leeds.

Harry Sampson from Bushey confirmed his place to read French and Spanish at St Catherine’s College, Oxford, with three A* grades. Also achieving 3 A*s were Thomas Kirby from Welwyn Garden City (Mechanical Engineering at Nottingham), Lara Superfine from Harpenden (Medicine at Southampton), and James Wilkinson from Hitchin (Chemistry at Durham).

Congratulating the students and teachers, Headmaster Jonathan Gillespie said, “With continued downward pressure on A Level grades nationally, we are delighted to see an increase in our A* and A grades which is greatly to the credit of our hard-working students as well as of our inspirational teaching staff. My warm congratulations go to our leavers together with my very best wishes for their university studies.”

GCSE

St Albans School is celebrating a record number of A* grades for the second year running with 59% of entries being awarded the top grade (compared to a national figure of 6.6%), an increase of 2.5% on the record set in 2014 which stands in marked contrast to the slight decrease in the award of the top grade nationally.

Other outstanding headline figures for the School this year are 87% A*& A grades (more than four times the national level of 21.2%) and 97% A*-B, both categories showing increases compared to 2014.

NB. Grade A includes both A and A*

40% of the year group achieved at least 8 A* grades, well over one quarter achieved at least 9 A*s and 20 boys were awarded at least 10 A* grades, 19 of whom gained straight A*s. Joshua Oliver (Redbourn) had the distinction of achieving a ‘clean sweep’ of 12 A* grades as did Will Deans (also of Redbourn) with 11 A*s. Twin brothers Andrew and Anthony Henein (Welwyn) both achieved a ‘clean sweep’ of 10 A* grades, and Luke and Thomas Hopper (Harpenden) gained a combined total of 19 A*s.

These achievements are all the more noteworthy given the fact that the vast majority of examinations taken at the School are now the International GCSE (IGCSE). More demanding than the national GCSE, the IGCSE generally provides a much better preparation for A Level courses, and St Albans School boys relish the greater challenges of IGCSE courses.

The Headmaster, Mr Jonathan Gillespie, comments: “Whilst we are delighted at this year’s further increase in our A* record, it is the success of individual pupils that gives the greatest satisfaction. They have my hearty congratulations on the outstanding results they have achieved at the end of two years of hard work. A special mention also goes to my colleagues for their expertise and dedication in enabling our candidates to achieve so highly. These achievements at GCSE provide an excellent springboard for the start of A Level courses and are all the more laudable given the wide-ranging commitments our pupils make to the extra-curricular life of the school, matching their academic successes with similar accomplishments in sport, music and drama.”

A LEVEL 2014

A* grades at the Abbey Gateway continued to account for around a quarter of all grades and two thirds were at A* or A. For the fourth year in succession and the sixth in total, more than 90% of all results were graded from A*- B grade, the most widely recognised measure of A level success.

The average number of A level passes was 3.9. 57 students achieved at least one A*, and 14 – more than 10% of the year group – achieved three or more A* grades. There were a number who excelled even among this exalted company:

Chris Williams goes to read Medicine at Pembroke College, Cambridge having achieved five A* grades; Eric Edmond, already a Gold medallist in the British Biology Olympiad, confirmed his place to read Medicine at Christ Church, Oxford, with three A*s and an A grade. Both heading for Cambridge, to read Engineering, are Robert Glew, bound for Queens’ College with four A* grades and Nick Stride, with three A*s and an A, to Fitzwilliam College. With the same grades, Nick Hill will read Chemical Engineering at Birmingham; Ellie Jarman is off to St Catherine’s College, Oxford, to read Chemistry; and Edmund Wrigley to read Biological Sciences at Merton College, Oxford. Head of School Joe Zacaroli proved that his time-management skills were a match for his responsibilities in collecting three A* grades to confirm his place to read Engineering at St Hugh’s College, Oxford.

These achievements reflect a year in which a record number of students won offers from Oxford or Cambridge and all 19 achieved the grades to secure their places.

GCSE 2014

The School is celebrating a record number of A* grades with 55.6% of entries being awarded the top grade (compared to a national figure of 6.7%). The 4.7% increase in the number of A*s achieved by St Albans School boys this year stands in marked contrast to the slight national decrease in the award of the top grade. Other outstanding headline figures for the School this year are 85% A* and A grades and 97% A*-B.

Charlie Broom now has 9 A* grades to his name to accompany his achievements in tennis.

N.B. Grade A includes both A and A*; English, English Literature, Mathematics and all the Sciences are IGCSEs.

A LEVEL 2013

This summer’s results reflect to some degree the politically-motivated downward pressure on top grades that has been noted nationally, but are still the third-best in the School’s long history. 93% of all A level results were at A*, A or B grade and 69% were at A* or A.
