The Choral Society returned to the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Albans on Wednesday 7 March for the annual Joint Schools’ concert. The event brought St Albans School and St Albans High School together in a large-scale concert in the Abbey, combining both school’s choirs with an orchestra comprising their elite musicians playing alongside professionals.
The programme was titled “Russian Choral Masterworks” and featured a rare Stravinsky Cantata. In recognition of the centenary of Debussy’s death (1862-1918), the School performed one of his major works – his beautiful, ever-popular Nocturnes and the monumental Prologue to Mussorgsky’s operatic masterpiece Boris Godunov, for which the Cathedral was filled with pealing bells. This year, Baritone Matthew Stiff, a former member of successful X-factor band G4 and now a leading British opera singer joined the event. The full St Albans School Choir took part in the concert, with record numbers in the chorus this year. The choir was joined by many of the girls from St Albans High School’s Choirs. The strength and vitality of the Joint Schools’ Choral Society came from the combination of these young singers and parents, staff and Old Albanians took part in this truly memorable event.
