The Autumn Concert this year took place in the unfamiliar setting of Woollams, as the hall undergoes building work for the new Music School. A packed evening included spectacular performances from the Concert Band, Sax Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra and many other talented groups of musicians. The Concert Band opened the concert, playing Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F. This was followed by their charming rendition of Ravel’s famous accelerating Bolero, before the Sax Ensemble played Now’s the Time, by Charlie Parker, with energetic swing. After this the Wind Orchestra played the uplifting Hawaii Five-O Theme with a driving rhythm, followed by compilation of memorable Disney songs, which was indeed A Disney Spectacular. The Flute Group played an arrangement of Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer, while the Barbershop sang I Wonder as I Wander, followed by a witty and amusing performance of Twelve Days of Christmas. The String Ensemble came next with two movements from Peter Warlock’s Capitol Suite and then Intermezzo, by Gustav Holst. After this the Junior Strings played three movements from Peter Martin’s Suite for Strings. The evening ended with two contrasting pieces from the Symphony Orchestra, firstly the energetic Slavonic Dance No.8, by Antonin Dvořák, before the audience was sent home soothed by Gabriel Fauré’s famous Pavane.
