A traditional feature of the cross country year is an October trip to Washington USA to compete in the Abermarle Invitational Race in Virginia. The race covers 5km and attracts runners from 35 of the best schools on the eastern coast of the USA. This year the Senior team runners discovered that they were running at the highest standard they had ever experienced, taking on a very hilly challenging course at a fast pace. All members of the team ran well to ensure a top 15 place and particular credit goes to Tom Fulton, who, in running St Albans’ best ever time in the race, came 6th. Intermediate team running in the Junior Varsity race ran very impressively, finishing in 2nd place, helped in particular by Alex Harris (2nd), James Moore (3rd) and Luca Stubbs (5th).
Our boys were hosted in America by families from St Albans School Washington and they were able to make some cultural visits, such as a tour of Capitol Hill and visits to war monuments, the White House and the Air and Space Museum. An additional highlight was being able to watch a training session by the Washington Capitals, the local ice hockey team.
